Elise Berkvens’ paintings construct spaces that feel both familiar and unstable. Architectural fragments, interiors and landscapes shift and overlap, forming environments that exist between observation and imagination.

Rather than depicting a fixed viewpoint, the works unfold as mental spaces in which perspective, memory and perception remain in flux. Everyday environments become sites of reflection, where boundaries between inside and outside, reality and projection begin to dissolve.

The work emerges from fragments that are reassembled into new spatial compositions, balancing between recognition and abstraction.

In a time when images are increasingly digital and generated, her work explores what it means to see through a physical and human perspective.

Recent work by Elise Berkvens

“Berkvens’ paintings function as mental spaces in which the gaze is not led toward a point of rest, but remains in constant motion, skimming across the painted surface.”

Mieke Mels

"I paint to sense and explore the complexity of the world. Spaces that seem familiar become disorienting; silence and movement meet the human desire for connection. Here, in the moment, a place arises to slow down, to look, and to feel."
