Elise Berkvens’ paintings construct spaces that feel both familiar and unstable. Architectural fragments, interiors and landscapes shift and overlap, forming places that seem to exist somewhere between observation and imagination.
Rather than depicting a fixed viewpoint, the works unfold as mental environments in which perspective, memory and perception continuously move. Everyday spaces become stages for reflection, where the boundaries between inside and outside, reality and projection begin to dissolve.

“Berkvens’ paintings function as mental spaces in which the gaze is not led toward a point of rest, but remains in constant motion, skimming across the painted surface.”
Mieke Mels
"I paint to sense and explore the complexity of the world. Spaces that seem familiar become disorienting; silence and movement meet the human desire for connection. Here, in the moment, a place arises to slow down, to look, and to feel."
